It may be helpful for parents to be aware that all schools are required by the Local Authority to report any obvious or suspected cases of child abuse. This includes non-accidental injury, severe physical neglect, emotional abuse and/or sexual abuse.  The procedure is intended to protect children and schools are encouraged to adopt the attitude that it is better to be safe than sorry.  School does not wish to risk upsetting parents by reporting a case which may prove to be unfounded. It is hoped, in these circumstances, parents will appreciate how difficult it is to carry out such a delicate responsibility and accept that the school was acting in what it believed to be the best interests of the child.
