What is Growth Mindset?

Teachers and parents can help create a growth mindset in students by praising them for their persistence or strategies (rather than for their intelligence), by telling success stories that emphasize hard work and love of learning and by teaching them about the brain as a learning machine.

Teaching people to have a ‘growth mindset’ encourages a focus on ‘process’ rather than on intelligence or talent and produces high achievers in school and in life.

At Rastrick we encourage our learners to adopt a growth mindset – their intelligence and ability are not fixed traits but can change with effort. We have done this by introducing the five R’s:

Students with a growth mindset are more resilient and determined, they have a passion for learning that will last, they do not allow problems and challenges to stop them from achieving. Students who have adopted a growth mindset embrace the challenge of learning. They want to be pushed and stretched in lessons as they recognise that only doing tasks that are easy will not lead to improvement.  We focus on mindsets throughout the year during tutorial time, formal lessons and through our Independent Learning Days.
